ALL COMMUNICATIONS TO SE ADDRESSED AND REMITTANCES MADE PAYABLE TO THE MANAGER"

[REG 7 JUN 95!

6th June

#95.

We beg to acknowledge-receipt of your letter of 1st instant

(No.9156/95 which was delivered to us on the 4th) regarding the

question of legislating against chopped dollars in Hongkong.

In our letter of 27th December last we gave it as our

q opinion that it would be inexpedient to legislate against

chopping dollars- this opinion was based on an experience of

some 5 years back and we would certainly wish to modify our view

in deference to our Chief Managers opinion, who is on the spot

and in the best position to judge of what is best for the Colony.

We note that in a letter addressed to the Colonial Secretary

dated 22nd April, our Chief Manager stated that he " strongly

" recommends that no special legislation in favour of chopping be

enacted but that British dollar be declared a legal tender by

count concurrently with Mexican dollary at 7.1.7 ", and we

understand that the Manager of the Chartered Bank of India,

Australia & China agreed with this recommendation.

We are, Sir,

Your obedient servants

Knotle

Manager.

Edward Fairfield, Esq., C.M .G.
